Situated in the famous Mactan Island Cebu, Maribago Bluewater is one of the pioneer luxury resort in the area – A classic I must say. Don’t get me wrong, when I say Classic I mean it in a good way. Yes, Maribago Bluewater is a pioneer but they managed to keep up with the time and the competition. For the young once, they would expect some old-fashioned Cebu resort but in reality Maribago is one very elegant and sophisticated resort which truly highlights the traditional Filipino Hospitality with a few modern twists.
I had the chance to stay in Maribago Bluewater recently and I was very impressed. It was my first time. I have been to several Mactan Island Resorts prior to this and my expectations were a bit high already – but Maribago Bluewater Delivered!
Upon entry to the resort (the entrance is near one of the main roads) you will be greeted by their super friendly staff and assist you with your check-in in their huge Gazebo Lobby. Upon stepping in, your vacation officially starts. Apart from the warm welcome from the staff, you get to enjoy a cold towel for a quick “freshen up” and of course a delicious welcome drink. A quick paperwork and credit card authorization, and you are good to go. Like I said your vacation starts at the lobby, from this point forward you have the option not to lift a finger.
Upon getting the key, you will be escorted and assisted to your room which is already cold because they already anticipated your arrival. You may ride a golf cart but I suggest (if you are not that tired) to walk to your room to familiarize yourself with the resort. It was not that humongous but not at all small as well. While walking you will see the gift shop, the other room clusters, the pond with sharks! Yes, real sharks swimming with the lapu-lapu! Restaurants and the Pools.
Our room was beautiful. I love the design, the use of wood and indigenous materials and the truly Filipino Design. The sliding wooded door was exquisite. This is how you you present the Philippines to the world! Beautiful! Speaking of presenting Philippines to the world, like my previous Mactan Cebu Experience, majority of the guests that weekend were foreigners, mostly Koreans and Japanese.
Moving back to our room. It has 2 super comfortable queen beds, a huge space with neutral colors and a character which exudes the Tradition! In and around the room, the use of wood was really prominent and the detail was exquisite! Bluewater Resorts’ were designed by no other than Mr. Benji Reyes. They call it Asymmetrical Artistic. They use a lot of recycled wood which is perfect!
And oh… the room is also equipped with all the standards of course – except for WiFi. The WiFi speed in Maribago Bluewater was really fast however, they are still working on getting a decent signal inside the rooms, at the moment you may access their Free WiFi in all the public places. But hey, you are on a Vacation right? Aside from the WiFi situation, one thing that I did not like about the resort is the use of desalinated water… the tap water was salty! Makes brushing my teeth a chore.
The rooms are situated inside the sprawling compounds of Maribago Bluewater. Only 2-story per building. They want to keep the rooms as cozy as possible and and also to answer the question – Why would you stay in a building and ride an elevator to get around while you are on a Vacation? Made me think… of course! If you are a foreign guest and you live in an apartment building in your country, you would want to enjoy a different ambiance for your vacation. You would want to walk around, ride a golf cart and enjoy the sun!

While enjoying my stay in Maribago, I realized how Family Oriented the resort was. You can bring in your kids and not worry about their safety. There are play areas all day long and the staff really takes care of your kids in case – you forgot about them – while enjoying the beach or the pool. They even know the names of the kids and talk with them. Except for the beach, there is no way your kids will get lost inside this fenced resort.
Aside from constantly eating and sleeping, there are a lot of stuff to do inside the resort. You can swim and enjoy in one of their 3 beautiful pools, visit the spa for an extra R&R, dine in one of their restaurants, shop for souvenirs, walk along the beach, kayaking, diving and other water sports, go to the gym, visit their Art Gallery which features local and national artists, play a life-size chess by the beach, ride a bike with a friend, play billiards, drink cocktails by the beach, feed the sharks, and my favorite activity of them all – lounging and doing nothing. If you get hungry at any time, you can always order food from anywhere within the resort as well.
You must try their Cebu Chorizo Pizza! It’s really Good! Also, Maribago Bluewater is the only resort with a Live Seafood Restaurant in Mactan and they have the longest coastline among all the resorts in Mactan. The beach, hmmm… like any other resort in Mactan was not that spectacular (Boracay being the standard, which is unfair) but it was decent. The addition of a second island near the beach makes the beach a worthy destination.
If you get bored or want to do a quick shopping, you can always visit Cebu City for Free, check out the free shuttle service schedule from Maribago Blue Water.
If you are out for a Honeymoon or a Romantic Getaway, how about Floating Beds and a Walk-in Shower by the beach? – Check out these Sexier Room from Maribago Bluewater.
My Stay at Maribago Bluewater was awesome. I love that while keeping up with the time, they maintained true to the traditional Filipino values and design. Did you know that in the resort:
- Use lots of recycled wood
- Only Hires Single Moms as Spa Therapists
- Worked around the trees when constructing the rooms
- Have no Expats – an all Filipino Staff and Management
- Have the longest coastline among the Mactan Resorts
- Only resort with a fully functional and updated art gallery
A truly world class resort that we should be proud of.
Well, yeah… of course world class comes with a price. But don’t worry, they make sure that locals can also enjoy the resort by constantly offering discounts and promos. Room rate starts at around 7,000+++. As of the time of writing they even packages at 65% off via Various Credit Cards.
Hanggang Sa Muli Paalam!
